Batwa Whole Community Development Justin Wren Joe Rogan Pygmy Mbuti Uganda Africa UFC

The Batwa Whole Community Development Project is a multi-faceted program aimed ultimately at providing a safe and dignified place for the displaced Batwa and surrounding tribal communities within which they can heal, grow, and thrive.

The community hub is a self-sustaining whole village development project that provides quality health care, education, livelihood, and entrepreneurial opportunities for the Batwa and surrounding communities. In addition, we will provide comprehensive training in community transformation, peacebuilding, stewardship, compassionate leadership, and empowerment for women and children.

The project takes a multi-sectoral approach to the objective recognizing that promoting a whole community requires a broad spectrum of inputs and activities, including sustainable, ecologically sound infrastructure, livelihoods, services, and community healing and growth. A successful project incorporates a wide array of actors including the beneficiary community, secondary community (surrounding), local officials, tribal and religious leaders, and the varied voices of the young, old, and under-represented.

The Batwa Community are currently living on 60+ acres of land with new houses, sanitation facilities, clean water supply, a playground, a football pitch, community crops and household garden plots. They are extremely happy and learning to overcome and thrive.

The Olangama land on which they live is located in an area with over 3000 non-Batwa neighbors. Yet, the area does not currently have a school, health clinic, or structured market area. The 500+ children within these communities are not attending school as the nearest primary school is more than a 2 hour walk away. The nearest health center is over an hour’s walk as is the nearest market to buy and sell goods.
